Kofi Essel-Appiah

Born and raised in Ghana, Kofi Essel-Appiah, studied Architecture in Brazil. After graduating with honours from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul School of Architecture and Urban Planning in Porto Alegre (1990), he practiced for a season in Porto Alegre, where he won laurels in a number of national competitions, before finally returning to Ghana.

He is the founder and Principal of PREDIOS. Founded in Accra in 1995, PREDIOS is now an architectural firm with a wide range of projects, from urban master plans, civic and cultural buildings and workplaces to private houses and interior designs.


Some of his key projects include the Japanese Embassy (Ghana); the Law Faculty Building of the University of Ghana; the masterplan of Central University College (Ghana); the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi, as well as a number of multiple-use projects in the Accra metropolis. He also served as project consultant for the World Bank project for the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and as design team leader and project development manager at the Ga East Hospital and Infectious Disease Centre.


Essel-Appiah chaired the Board of the Commonwealth Association of Architecture for the recently-acquired revalidation of the Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture programs of the K.N.U.S.T. Keen on promoting the ideals of the profession, Kofi Essel-Appiah has served on the Council of the Ghana Institute of Architects. He currently sits on the board of the Architects Registration Council in Ghana and Ghana Green Building Council. He has also been an associate of the Ghana Institute of Architects.
